Dog spikes—colloquially known in the industry as “dog-head” spikes—are a type of drive-in fastener designed specifically for tracks using wooden sleepers. As a traditional rail fastening component, they secure rails and tie plates by leveraging the grip between the spike body and the wood fibers of the sleeper. This ensures a stable gauge and prevents the rails from lifting or shifting laterally. The spike features a hook-shaped head designed to fit over the rail base, a shank with a generally square cross-section, and a chisel-shaped tip. They are installed by hammering them into pre-drilled holes in the wooden sleepers, a process that is both simple and highly efficient.
Dog spikes are primarily used in railway applications with relatively low traffic volume, such as branch lines with wooden sleepers, dedicated industrial or mining lines, factory tracks, light freight railways, and tourist/scenic railway lines.
